The amount of space typically required from the edge of the desk to the wall for guest chairs does, in some degree, depend upon the type of chairs you're using as guest chairs. In general, if the seat of your guest chairs are 25-30" deep, and they are not wheeled guest chairs, then your guest will require a minimum of 38-40" from the edge of the desk to push back his/her chair. The minimum distance from the edge of the desk to the wall is 48", which allows for both your guest to back up his/her chair and also to pass between the chair and the wall, albeit a bit uncomfortably. The recommended distance is 60" from the table edge to the wall, allowing your guest to back up fully and pass comfortably.
