Hi Deb,
Thank you for your great question about the the Quartet® DuraMax® 36 x 24 Porcelain Magnetic Whiteboard.
This board only mounts horizontally. The marker tray, or "ledge" is not removable, but it's not overly large either! It's hard to tell from the product image, because it is actually a picture of a "sample." The board is cut in half, and the frame and marker tray enlarged to show detail. Here is a picture of the whole board:
