All Universal Chair Mats are made to last a lifetime. Universal backs this up with a lifetime warranty on defects. If your mat cracks, for example, ten years from now, Universal will replace it. You just need to hold on to your order number and return the mat for a new one.
To save yourself frustration, make sure you get the right mat for your floor. The Universal Chair Mats are designed for use on carpets of 3/8" or less, including padding.

 | Straighten the end of a paper clip, then sink it into the carpet, through the backing, until it reaches the floor. |
 | Grab the paper clip at the point where it's flush with the carpet. (Be sure you're not matting down the carpet with your hand.) Measure the distance between your fingers and the end of the paper clip. That's the carpet's thickness. |
