Hi Walter,
Thank you for your question about Ticonderoga Pencils.
Pencils are graded on hardness and darkness on a number scale. The higher the number, the harder the lead, and the lighter the mark. The lower the number, the softer the lead and the darker the mark.
So, a No. 1 pencil is great if you want a nice black color. Meanwhile, since No. 4 pencil leads are harder, they don't dull as quickly and require less sharpening. They are great for those who write with a heavy hand. No. 2 pencils are the most popular, offering a nice balance of color and durability.
