Hi Melani,
Thank you very much for your question regarding the Sentry electronic fire safe. You would need the key and the combination to open this safe. It is possible to leave the key in key lock in the open position, and then you would open the safe using the combination lock.
One of the main reason this safe has a combo lock and a key lock is to make sure that the person who is opening can be verified two ways. If it was just a combination lock another person could communicate the combination to another person and un lock the safe. With a physical key the person who is authorized to open the safe has to be there to open the safe with the combination. Hope I explained the reasoning behind the design of this product.
Secondly, here are some other interesting things you would like to know about this safe. If you breakdown the product number it will also tell you some great information about this product! SENSFW123GDC
SEN stands for Sentry Safe
S stands for safe
F stands for 1 Hour/1700° Fire Rating for digital media devices., UL-1 Hour/1700°F Fire Rating
W lets you know it is water resistant
1.23 represents 1.23 cubic feet of storage inside the unit
G - Electronic combination with back light
D - The safe has a drawer
C - Can be bolted to a floor and there is a light inside
I thought is was pretty interesting that they thought of putting a light inside the safe and that this safe can be bolted to the floor. Sentry also recommends using National batteries, like Duracell or Energizer that have an expiration date in year 2022 or 2023.
Hope that this helps. Please note that this item is a quick ship item with an expected delivery date of 1-2 days. Please call or e-mail with any additional questions and we are here to help!
Thanks!
