Thanks for your question about the thickness of a chair mat. I understand your concern about dimpling and I will be able to provide you with the correct advice on this issue. When dimpling occurs it is because the surface, in this case carpet, has pile (thickness of carpet) and carpet padding that is too high for the mat. This will walk you though the best way to measure, shape, and choose the best mat for your floors. I would recommend looking at this article. Second thing I would tell someone is that the chair mats that you will find at the box stores (Office Depot, Staples, Office Max) are going to be for low pile carpet, they can be rolled up and are not going to be as thick. Chair mats are like other things in life, the more they cost the thicker, more durable, and better the product. Cheap = flimsy.
