Hope that you had a great weekend and thank you for your question the length of stem on the Master Caster Superball Casters. We put out an really useful guide on "How to replace your chair casters" and it explains the different sizes of stems, when to use hard vs soft casters, and even has nifty diagram of all the chair casters. The stem on this Master Caster Superball caster is a "W stem" which would mean that it is 1 1/2" high and 5/16" wide. Now as far as 2.5 inch high, you could use this in a deeper caster hole, but the main thing to consider is the width of the hole. You really need it to be snug, so it does not move around, and the height is really less of a consideration.
